GIVING BIG THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Posted December 24, 2013
The Learn Fresh team has been active in communities across the United States this holiday season, providing opportunities for young learners to engage with math and basketball in exciting new ways through NBA Math Hoops. Following the early December release of the free NBA Math Hoops mobile app, students have been able to access Math Hoops with unprecedented ease. Learn Fresh has teamed up with Big Picture Learning to host a "Math Champion Challenge" competition for students in BPL schools around the United States, and has several large initiatives planned for 2014. The team will continue to revise and enhance the product in the upcoming year, while maintaining its availability at no cost for all iOS and Android users.
In Cleveland, the NBA Math Hoops City Chapter Initiative is in full swing, engaging over 1,200 students, parents, and educators throughout Northeast Ohio and Columbus. Students from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lorain County celebrated their accomplishments from the first half of the year with a Math Hoops party on December 17. These same students, along with approximately 500 more from the Cleveland Public Schools, Open Doors Academy, BGC Cleveland, Breakthrough Schools, Esperanza, and the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, received tickets to attend a Cavaliers game with their parents on December 23 or 26. To date, 505 NBA Math Hoops games and over 1,700 Cavaliers tickets have been distributed to participating sites and students. A huge thank you to the Cleveland Cavaliers - an ideal partnering organization with a staff that has been incredibly supportive of this initiative's growth.
The city of Boston has also seen an influx of NBA Math Hoops activity this December. Over 400 games have been donated to the Boston Globe's holiday initiative, Globe Santa, for distribution to children throughout the Greater Boston area. The Learn Fresh team is excited about the opportunity to create so many new Math Champions in our local community this holiday season. Plans are in the works to expand NBA Math Hoops programming throughout the city of Boston and in the New England area throughout 2014. More information to come!
